SPICEWOOD, TX (April 25, 2012) –
The Buzzards are coming…to the Spicewood Buzzard Bump, to be held Saturday, May 19, from 10 am to 7 pm!
Sponsored annually by the Spicewood Lions Club, the festival site is in Spicewood, only 35 miles northwest of Austin on Highway 71, between the towns of Bee Cave and Marble Falls.
This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with a full slate of musical entertainment headlined by Larry Joe Taylor as well as live action Wild West Shows performed by the Brazos Bottom Cowographers. Designed to appeal to people of all ages, it will also feature a “Bird Cook-Off,” a “Road Kill” Car/Truck/Motorcycle Show, washer pitching tournament, merchandise and food vendors, and more.
Upon its inception, the event was named in honor of the buzzard, the much-maligned and often overlooked bird considered by many to be the unofficial bird of Spicewood. It is the Spicewood Lions Club’s signature fundraising event, the proceeds of which stay entirely in the Spicewood area. For entry, a donation of $3 (or 3 canned goods) is requested (free for children under 5), with free parking at the site. The event is again “BYOB” (ice chests allowed) and dog-friendly (if leashed and well-behaved). Covered seating will be available in the “Rest Your Buns” tent, and folding chairs and blankets are permitted as well.
“We have been thrilled with the return of many of last year’s sponsors,” says Brett Weiss, Chairman of this year’s event, “including Spicewood Plumbing & Spicewood Propane (“Soaring Buzzard” Title Sponsor) and Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse (Music Stage Sponsor). “We are also pleased to welcome the folks at LandArt Garden Center as the Western Town Sponsor, and Bump N Grindz, Spicewood’s new coffee/ice cream shop, as T-shirt Sponsor,” continues Brett.
Another key contributor, Barbeques Galore, returns again this year to sponsor the “Bird Cook-Off,” with prizes to the top three entries. Entries are still being accepted for the cook-off, which is open to any type of (non-protected) fowl cooked in any style. Barbeques Galore is also donating an Odeon 32” Crossray Gas Grill (retail value $1499) to be raffled off at the Spicewood Community Center following the Lions Club’s annual 4th of July parade. Raffle tickets will be available for sale at the Buzzard Bump.
The Washer Pitching Tournament, sponsored by Spicewood Metalworks, offers cash prizes and is still accepting entries
The “Roadkill Car Show,” again sponsored by Assassin Pest Control, also continues to accept entries (cars, trucks and motorcycles) in several categories, including Antique, Muscle and Custom.
Other supporters include:
- Bee Creek Realty – “Kettle” (Vendor) Booth Sponsor
- Duich Turf Services - “Buzzard Dump” (Port-A-Can) Sponsor
- Hill Country Haiku – “The Roost” (Big Tent) Sponsor
- Spicewood K-9 Club – Wristband Sponsor
- Spicewood Metalworks – Washer Tournament Sponsor
- Outhouse Designs – Logo Sponsor
- Paleface Grocery – Drink Trailer Sponsor
- Dewey Hollingsworth - Event Location Sponsor
- Spicewood Volunteer Fire Dept – Parking/Facility Sponsor
“This event would not be possible without the support of the community,” says Jack Veasey, Club President-Elect. “We are grateful to all the residents and businesses who are pitching in by sponsoring the event and/or by donating their goods and services,” he continues. “We encourage attendees to patronize our sponsors and let them know how much they are appreciated.”
The Buzzard Bump was recently described as an event “Of Spicewood, By Spicewood, and For Spicewood” by local Lion Beth Howe. “The emphasis this year has been on increasing participation by local food and merchandise vendors and non-profit organizations. In addition to raising funds for local causes,” she continues, “another goal of the Buzzard Bump is to bring local residents, businesses, and non-profit organizations together for a day of entertainment and community-building.” Space remains for local merchandise vendors ($50) and non-profits ($10).
In addition, the Spicewood Lions Club will be honoring a local resident with the First Annual Saluting Buzzard Award at the event. “Many Spicewood residents have been active in our community for years. The 2010 wildfire presented many challenges but also brought out the best in everyone,” says Club President, Andy Blair. “With this Award, the Lions Club wishes to recognize the efforts of someone who has made a significant contribution to the community during the preceding year.” The winner, to be announced at 1:30 during the event, will be presented with a trophy as well as a $1,000 check for a charity of their choice.
