McMichael was the first African-American to serve as the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps (1999-2003), the highest rank obtainable by an enlisted Marine and a position held by only one person at any given time. During his tenure, he oversaw the establishment of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program and the commencement of the Global War on Terrorism. In June of 2003, deferring his planned retirement, McMichael assumed a newly created post as the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer for Allied Command Operations (2003-2006), becoming the senior enlisted advisor to General James L. Jones, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe; and Commander, United States European Command. McMichael retired from the Marine Corps in 2006 after 36 years of service.
